I
t's never been easy to be a Ross Ryan fan. He's not released any material for years. He's stopped touring and has been locked in the studio for a decade or more working on what we here at Coathanger optimistically refer to as his "forthcoming album".

Then when he at last appears on TV, it's on a gardening show AND you have to sit through an hour and a half of unscheduled cricket not to mention three quarters of an hour of gardening tips and people's cats! Sheech!!

So was it worth the wait?

Don, The Wife Tina & Ross

. It depends. If you were hoping to find some insight into Ross's life, legend and music - probably not. If however, your taste veers towards middle aged men dressed in green smocks discussing petunias then it was probably an entirely satisfying experience
Of course much gets left on the cutting room floor. Take for example the food fight or the amphitheater concert scene where Ross, after performing a couple of recent songs, explained to Don that he was working on a new album and that anyone who contacted him would score a free credit on the CD. Considering this is Coathanger's sole marketing strategy - the word "ironic" does spring to mind.

Mark congratulates Ross for the gold records he earned 25 years ago

Not that we're complaining.

Our client (Ross) has now appeared on one of Australia's highest rating and well meaning television programs. The BBY crew couldn't have been more accommodating and their editing of the hour or more of material they shot made Ross, his family and even Mark appear witty and coherent.

Much thanks guys.

Also, we have since been swamped here at Coathanger with e-mails from cricket and gardening fans who accidentally saw Ross's appearance and want to know where they can buy Mark Holden albums. This is a market segment that we have probably neglected in the past and it's gratifying to know that we've now well and truly covered that base.

Speaking of which, a special commendation must be awarded to Mr Holden who, despite his esteemed standing in the community, willingly went along with the free association techniques Ross tries to pass off as humour. No further proof required that Mark is one of the good guys. Also thanks to our engineer Broc and to Steve Blackburn - who to our eternal gratitude - talked Ross out of his original Andy Kaufman-ish designs.

Ross's son Paul relaxes in the studio Green Room

Undoubably one of the highlights of the day was when the cameras left the garden and entered Ross's studio/greenhouse - G.I. Recorders. There Don & Mark lent their voices to one of Ross's new songs - "Spirit of the Rain".
